“I’m not your brother!”: Video reveals police’s stunning double-standard for black Americans

Source: Salon

Friday, Aug 29, 2014 9:00 AM EDT

The latest in police misconduct was captured in a cellphone video that surfaced earlier this week. The video depicts a black man, identified as 28-year-old Christopher Lollie, sitting in a public space waiting to pick up his young children from New Horizon Academy in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota.

“I want to know who you are and what the problem was back there,” a female cop says to Lollie at the start of the video.

“There is no problem, that’s the thing,” he replies.

<snip>

Shortly thereafter, the phone gets knocked out of Lollie’s hands as the cops cuff him. One can then hear the sound of a taser charging and Lollie’s screams as the cops tase him.

Russian and Ukraine troops battle in south, prompting fears that invasion has begun

Source: Washington Post

By Annie Gowen and Karoun Demirjian August 28 at 4:08 AM

KIEV, Ukraine — Fighting between Russian troops and the Ukrainian military worsened early Thursday, prompting fears in Ukraine that a Russian invasion of their territory has begun.

Ukrainian troops are continuing to battle combined Russian and separatist forces on a new, southern front around the border town of Novoazovsk, east of Crimea on the Sea of Azov. In addition, a military spokesman said Russian troops are increasing surveillance from northern Crimea, the autonomous Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in March.

As firefights and shelling continued all day Wednesday and into the night, there were differing reports on whether Novoazovsk, a previously quiet border town, had fallen to Russian-backed separatists. Russian troops and their allies do control villages north of there, according to military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said.

Referring to a “Russian-directed counteroffensive,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday, “Clearly, that is of deep concern to us, but we’re also concerned by the Russian government’s unwillingness to tell the truth, even as its soldiers are found 30 miles inside Ukraine.”

Begun? The invasion has been going on for weeks now! (And I'm not even including Crimea.)

A summer of violence is exposing Europe’s foreign policy weaknesses

Source: GlobalPost

August 28, 2014 00:31
LISBON, Portugal — European Union leaders have met 162 times since the bloc first began holding regular summits back in 1975, but this Saturday's gathering will be their first-ever during the month of August.

The EU's presidents and prime ministers are breaking their previously sacrosanct vacation month amid a summer of violence that has seen Russia foment bloody unrest in Ukraine; Islamist gangs sow terror from Nigeria to Iraq; and the deadliest upsurge in Israeli-Palestinian fighting in a decade.

Officially, however, a response to the arc of instability stretching around the EU's eastern and southern flanks won't be on the summit agenda.

Instead, the 28 national leaders meeting at the bloc's headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, are supposed to spend their few hours together resolving a spat over which of their nominees should be appointed to top EU jobs coming up for grabs in autumn.

There's no doubt the unprecedented array of security threats will force their way into the talks, but the summit's lightweight schedule underscores what many see as Europe's dangerous disconnect from the instability surrounding it.

Syrian rebels, al Qaeda-linked militants seize Golan Heights border crossing

Majdal Shams, Golan Heights (CNN) -- Rebels aided by al Qaeda-linked militants seized control of the only border crossing between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Wednesday.

The capture of the Quneitra crossing by Syrian rebels, including members of the al Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front, represents a new dynamic in a war long feared not only for its deadly effects inside Syria but for threatening to widen into a destabilizing regional conflict.

The border crossing made headlines earlier this week, when American journalist Peter Theo Curtis was handed over on the Syrian side of the checkpoint by the al-Nusra Front to U.N. peacekeepers.

During the fighting on Wednesday between Syrian forces and rebels, three errant mortar rounds and some small-arms fire crossed into Israeli-controlled territory, IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said.

Hmm. mortar rounds and small-arms fire have penetrated Israel's territory. I wonder how the Israelis will react?

It’s not just the South and Fox News: Liberals have a white privilege problem too

Joseph Heathcott writes:

I spent 12 years of my life in St. Louis. I went to college there. Got married. Landed my first teaching job. Bought my first house. Between door-knocking for candidates and causes, driving around on ice cold nights in a homeless shelter van, and breaking bread in people’s homes and churches and synagogues, I came to know the metropolis well. I came to love and admire its many communities — including Ferguson: so tenacious, so full of hardworking families trying to stay afloat, trying to dismantle racial apartheid and make a better life for their children.

But each time I tried to write about Ferguson, I could only stare into the blank screen, dumbfounded. It wasn’t the killing of Michael Brown that left me speechless: tragically, the murder of black men by police is common. It wasn’t the riots that stumped me: Ferguson residents are rightfully fed up with being treated as second-class citizens. It wasn’t even the ludicrous spectacle of a hyper-militarized police response. I’ve been following that story for years.

No, what dumbfounded me was the outpouring of white anger and resentment. As police, pundits, politicians and their supporters sought control over the narrative of events in Ferguson, they drew from the deep well of moral panic and race hatred that in many ways define our contemporary political landscape. I am not talking about the moronic counter-protests by the Klan, or the impending race war hallucinated by capital-R Racists. I am talking about the insidious language of white privilege — the civil, polite, unconscious adoption by white people of racially normative viewpoints that give us comfort and help explain the world on our terms.

For those of us born with white skin, white privilege is the air we breathe; we don’t even have to think about it. It is like the fish that never notices the water in which it swims. It is a glorious gift we have given to ourselves through the social order we have constructed, from top to bottom and bottom to top. It is the pillage of continents, the enslavement of people, the hatred of dark-skinned “others,” all somehow magically laundered by our commitments to democracy, self-reliance, individualism and the “post-racial, color-blind society.” It is our abject unwillingness to confront our history, to correct the deficits of our memory, to lean against the amnesia of a white story told.

Meanwhile, white privilege is a grand protection racket. It has always paid substantial dividends, both in the short term and over generations, by restricting access to a valuable commodity — white skin. The wage we extract from racial difference keeps us committed to its perpetuation, even if we don’t know (or refuse to believe) that we are so committed. White privilege is a legacy, an inheritance, an account on which we can draw over and over and over again for any advantage, however small. It is the accumulation of racially protected, white-defended land, property, education, goods, institutions, mobility, rights and freedom. It is the ultimate head start. Rarely do we even know that we are drawing on these protected accounts, so ubiquitous and profound is the fund. Wave after wave of immigrants has had to learn this lesson, adopting white privilege and anti-black racism to fit properly into their new country.

Oh yes, that designation White is the brass ring in this country, when you stop to think about it. I'm Irish-American, and I know others of my tribe who don't consider Greek-Americans, Jewish-Americans, or even Italian-Americans to be "white." I make it a special point to remind them that, less than 200 years ago, there were signs at the docks of New York and Boston reading, "No Dogs or Irish Allowed!"

Zara Is Sorry for Making a Shirt That Looked Like a Nazi Concentration Camp Uniform

Zara says it is very, very sorry for selling the children’s T-shirt you see up above, which looks awfully similar to the uniforms Jews wore in Nazi concentration camps. The gold star says “Sheriff,” because the tee was apparently meant to invoke old westerns. (Were Texas law men ever into blue sailor stripes?) Anyway, here are some Jews dressed up at Buchenwald, as a frame of reference. Their stars have a big N on them, which stands for Niederländer.
